The 2026 Numbers Behind the Calculator

These are the key figures in effect for 2026. Income and spousal figures adjust each January and July, and the calculator is kept current with them.

Income: the Nursing Home and Waiver cap is $2,982 per month, or $5,964 for couples who are both applying. A Miller Trust can cure being over it.

Assets: $2,000 for a single applicant, or $4,000 for couples who are both applying. The home, one vehicle, and retirement accounts are generally exempt in Kentucky.

Spousal protection: the at-home spouse can keep up to $162,660 in assets and between $2,705 and $4,066.50 per month in income.

Being Over a Limit Is Where Planning Starts

Eligibility is not a cliff, it is a calculation. If the calculator shows income above the $2,982 cap, Kentucky law allows a Qualified Income Trust (Miller Trust) that redirects the excess so you can still qualify.

Countable assets above the limit rarely have to be spent on care. Spousal protections, exempt-asset strategies, and careful timing routinely preserve much of what families have built.

One caution: Kentucky reviews the last 60 months of gifts and transfers, with a 2026 penalty divisor of $325.41 per day. If anything has been given away, talk to us before you apply.
